It's an application server, so obviously every user I have will need the ability to connect to the server via RDP.ĭoes this mean I need to provide a RDS CAL for every user (so, 30), OR, does it mean I need to purchase an RDS CAL just for every user I anticipate connecting concurrently/ at any given time (so this would be more like 10)? The verbiage isn't exactly clear on this.Īlso, just so I'm sure: OS license (getting standard, we don't need the virtualization benefits of the Datacenter version), user CALs, and RDS CALs. User CAL for each user that needs to connect to the RD Session Host The TechNet article on CALs says I need to "provide an RDS Per User CALs make much more sense than device CALs in my situation. I have 25 users on the server and this will probably stay about the same, so I plan to buy 30 user CALs.
#MICROSOFT REMOTE DESKTOP LICENSE UPGRADE#
Looks like we don't have software assurance so I can't just upgrade the existing CALs unfortunately. Purchasing a 2012 R2 Standard license so I'm set with the actual OS license. The existing server is a 2008 R2 box and the new hardware will have 2012 R2 as an OS. I'm replacing a server a short time from now. New to this so hoping to get some advice here.
